Here at the Plop Culture camp this month, we have been listening to Weezer’s ‘The Teal Album’. This is Weezer’s 12th studio album and was released digitally by surprise on January 24th, 2019. The album comprises of 10 cover songs, all staying close to the original, but with the distinctive Weezer finesse.
After an Internet fan campaign for Weezer to record a cover version of Toto’s ‘Africa’, Weezer trolled fans by recording and releasing a version of the Toto song ‘Rosanna’. Finally releasing ‘Africa‘ in May 2018. The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
Receiving a mixed bag of reviews upon release, and eventually peaking at number 5 on the Billboard 200 charts.
We are big fans of Weezer here at Plop Culture and recommend you giving this album a go, there are some fantastic covers on the album (full track listing below) including Africa, No Scrubs, Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Paranoid.
If you get the chance, watch their live Jimmy Kimmel performance of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World‘ on YouTube featuring original Tears for Fears members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.
