In celebration of the cinematic release of Avengers: Endgame, we have compiled a list of all our favourite Marvel Video games and ranked them accordingly. There are a lot of video games based on Marvel Comics, but this list was really hard to put together, as there are a lot of bad ones. We love rubbish games here at NERDFACE, so be sure to look out for a list of them soon. So let’s start with #10…

10. Lego Marvel Superheroes (PS3/4, XBOX 360/ONE, Wii U, Windows)

The only Lego-based Marvel game on this list, as that will be another future list on its own, however, it is probably the best one. There are 180 playable Marvel characters to choose from on this epic adventure to save the world from the evil Galactus. Following the same pattern as most previous Lego games, players must fight their way through multiple puzzles and boss battles, in order to stop the super-villains from collecting cosmic bricks fallen to earth from the Silver Surfers broken surfboard. A must play for fans of the Lego gaming series.

Lego Marvel Superheroes gets a Stupid Ross rating of 6.5/10.

9. Guardians of The Galaxy: A Telltale Series (Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One)

This episodic adventure from now-defunct TellTale games, tells the story of our favourite Guardians as they discover a powerful artefact and must stop it from falling into the wrong hands. Evolving the gameplay from previous TellTale series, it is still familiar and simple to pick up, playing mainly as Star-Lord, the other characters are playable during fight sequences and backstories. The game is based on the Marvel Comics and film series but is a new original story, that focuses on The Guardians as a dysfunctional family unit. It is a shame that TellTale Games came to an end in October last year, as we will not see a sequel to this game, as well as many other TellTale series.

Guardians of The Galaxy: A Telltale Series gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7/10.

8. Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage (Super NES, Mega Drive/Genesis)

This side-scrolling game was released in 1994 for the Sega Mega-Drive and Snes and is a classic from the era. You play as Spiderman and Venom and must take on Carnage and his hoard of villains and criminals, as they try to take over New York City. You are aided by the likes of Captain America, Iron Fist, Black Cat and others, as well as Carnage being aided by his supervillain friends Carrion, Demogoblin, Shriek and more. The soundtrack was
recorded by American Rock Legends Green Jelly (The Bear Song, 3 Little Pigs), there is also an uncredited version of Black Sabbaths ‘The Mob Rules’ which was used for Spidey’s battle against Doppelganger. This game doesn’t really hold up to today’s gaming standards, but for its time it was great.

Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage gets a Stupid Ross rating of 6.5/10.

7. Captain America and The Avengers (Arcade, NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES, Game Gear, Game Boy)

This arcade classic originally released in 1991 was an absolute hoot. I remember playing it as a kid when I used to go visit my Dad at weekends. We lived in Weymouth, and right next to Alexandria Gardens, an arcade near the beach. This was one of my favourites, as well as the old Street Fighter titles. When it was eventually released on the Mega-Drive my Dad bought it for me, but I would still play it in the arcade when I got the chance. The Red Skull is the villain in this outing, and you can choose between 4 of the Avengers (Cap, Hawkeye, Vision and Iron Man) to take him down. Players also get to battle Ultron, Mandarin, The Juggernaut and more part of the Red Skulls villainous team. This classic side scroller is a must play if you ever get the chance to give it a go.

Captain America and The Avengers gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7/10.

6. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PlayStation 3/4, Xbox 360/ONE, PlayStation Vita, Windows)

This is my favourite game in this long-running Beat’Em Up series. Getting to choose 3 characters from the Marvel and Capcom worlds to do battle against your foes, using the tag team method as in previous titles to swap between your characters. I have never been very good at Beat ‘Em Ups at all, I’m one of those people who just button bashes their way to occasional victories, however with this game the button bashing never worked so well, combos galore. Dream matches are aplenty in this game such as Resident Evil’s Nemesis vs Guardian of the Galaxy Rocket Racoon, backed up by whoever you choose. Great for playing with a bunch of mates, round robin with plenty of Cider, perfect pre-drinks Friday night fun.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7/10.

5. Spiderman 2 (GBA, GameCube, Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, N-Gage, Mac, Nintendo DS, PSP)

This 2004 open-world classic was the first Spiderman game to really get it right. Really nailing it with Spidey’s web-slinging mechanics, for the first time we were able to swing around the boroughs of New York City as the web crawler. The main storyline was based around Mysterio, one of the best Marvel villains, who is a special effects artist, tries to prove that Spiderman is a fraud. As well as tying into the events of the movie; Doc Ock trying to create nuclear fusion, Mary Jane being kidnapped and getting Tritium from Harry Osbourne. Spiderman is helped along his way by Black Cat and has to defeat other villains such as Rhino and Shocker, as well as all the random street thugs in side missions. Half the fun of this game is just swinging around New York, visiting the sites and jumping off tall buildings, only to break out your webs just before hitting the ground. Every Spiderman game since this release owes it a debt of gratitude, this truly was the start of great Spiderman games.

Spiderman 2 gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7.5/10.

4. X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse (Windows, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PSP, N-Gage)

One of the best games released on the Nintendo GameCube, it was a game that really utilised GameCube’s 4 controller ports. XL2 is fun to play single player but really comes alive when you play with 3 other mates. The aim of the game is with your trusty team, to take down the supervillain Apocalypse, as he has declared the Age of Apocalypse is upon us. Choosing characters from the X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants, as well as unlocking new playable characters along the way, there is also a large cast of familiar non-playable faces. The Sequel to X-Men Legends, where you had to take on the powerful Magneto, XL2 evolves the gameplay and storyline into a great new adventure.

X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7.5/10.

3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2/3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360)

It’s not very often where a video game tie in is better than the movie, but in this case, it is. This hack and slash action adventure is so much fun to play. I originally played this in one day with a friend on Xbox 360, after playing the demo, we journeyed into the city to pick up a copy and played it until we finished it. Loosely following the events of the movie, you play as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine exploring his rich backstory, slicing and
stabbing enemies with your Adamantium claws. This game had great visuals that really tested the limits of the Xbox 360’s capability, if the film had been better, this game would have been better. The game was gory in the Uncaged version, to make a point of the gruesomeness of the characters comic book origins, which was left out from the film. Taking some inspiration from successful gaming titles like God of War and Devil May Cry, the gameplay is fun for casual and experienced gamers alike.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine gets a Stupid Ross rating of 7.5/10.

2. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Xbox 360/ONE, Windows, PlayStation 2/3/4, Game Boy Advance, PSP, Wii)

Following on from the success of the X-Men Legends series, Ultimate Alliance moves the series into the wider Marvel Universe. With a huge Character roster to choose from, with plenty more to unlock throughout the game, Ultimate Alliance is best played multiplayer. I have such good memories of playing this game to death with friends, converging at my house nightly to save the world from Doctor Doom and Galactus. We found that if you chose either Deadpool or Wolverine in your team, you stood a pretty good chance of completing this game easily, as these characters couldn’t die and regenerated health. We had so much fun with this game, changing characters regularly despite having to level them up, Rubbish-Man always stayed as Deadpool, who was by far the best character in the game, with his use of guns, swords, teleportation and invulnerability. So many supervillains to fight, with a very memorable boss fight against a full-sized Galactus. Spawning a sequel which is just as much fun, a new title is scheduled for release later this year exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Get your mates together and give this game a good sesh.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance gets a Stupid Ross rating of 9/10.

1. Marvel’s Spiderman (2018, PlayStation 4)

This game is just incredible, Rubbish-Man bought a PS4 just so he could play it. It’s so good that I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t played it yet. By far the best Spiderman game, best Marvel game and quite frankly one of the best PS4 games to date. It makes you feel that you are actually Spidey, with the graphics and gameplay mechanics second to none. Just go and buy it, take some time off work, and play it, a lot.

Marvel’s Spiderman 2018 gets a Stupid Ross perfect rating of 10/10.
