I’ve been on a bit of a classic Horror movie kick recently, well… more than usual. Making my way through all my favourites and more, from directors like John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Clive Barker, Stephen King and many more great masters of Horror. So many great films have been made over the years, that there are far too many to talk about. My recent binge has seen me working my way through John Carpenters back catalogue, and it has been very enjoyable. This back catalogue contains some of my all-time favourite films.
Putting together a list of my favourites would be to hard to define and choose, so I’ll set the scenario. As a community we are putting together a collection of the greatest Horror movies off all time to be stored in the archives of human history for all time. I have been selected to pick 10 films to put into the archive. A very prestigious position. Also you the readers are to have your say in the comments.
So I have watched and thought hard and these are my 10 picks to go into the Horror Movie Archives for all eternity…
The Thing – 1982
The 1982 classic from John Carpenter is probably one of my favourite films of all time. This Horror Sci-fi is set in a science research outpost in Antarctica, starring Kurt Russell, Keith David and Wilford Brimley.
Alien – 1979
Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, Alien is a masterpiece. Spawning multiple sequels, and more planned, Alien is full of jump scares and brilliant story telling.
Poltergeist – 1982
Bar the first two Alien films, this was the first Horror movie I ever saw. I must have been maybe 8 or 9. The scene with the man and the mirror haunted me for years, and led to many a sleepless night.
Candyman – 1982
Another one for more nostalgic reasons, this was another stand out from my early childhood. Starring Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd as the infamous bee chewing Candyman.
An American Werewolf in London – 1981
My Mother introduced me to this film in my early teens, as it was one of her favourites. I’ve loved it ever since, and it has my favourite Werewolf transformation scene in a movie.
The Shining – 1980
A masterpiece of Modern Horror. The combination of two of cinemas heavyweights, Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King, and a career defining performance from Jack Nicholson, The Shining is timeless.
The Evil Dead – 1981
The first film in director Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead Trilogy stars Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. The Book of The Dead is discovered and all Hell is let loose. This cult classic was remade in 2013.
The Return of The Living Dead – 1985
Cheesy as all Hell, but such a good watch. “Brains, Braaaiins”
28 Days Later – 2002
British post-apocalyptic Horror at it’s best. Written by the brilliant Alex Garland, and Directed by Danny Boyle. A 21st Century classic already 17 years old.
The Blair Witch Project – 1999
For it’s time The Blair Witch Project was genuinely scary, I watched it alone and literally shit my pants. I didn’t, but I could have, I was that scared. Especially nearer the end of the film as the tension gets thicker.
I’ve probably overlooked loads, but these are some my personal favourites, let me know your favourites, and what you would put into the Horror movie archives. Follow me on twitter HERE and if you like looking at all sorts of nerdy things, subscribe to our YouTube channel HERE.
